Creative Guts

Rick Fox

Episode Summary

In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman sit down with painter Rick Fox. Rick is an oil painter who primarily paints plein air landscapes and human heads (thanks to some help from the mirror) in a style he describes as simplified expressionist realism. Notably, Rick is the winner of the 2022 Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement Grant — a grant he applied for seven times — which has given him the chance to create with more freedom than ever. In this episode, we talk with Rick about what he learned through the grant writing process and what advice he would have for future contenders, his experiences teaching painting and drawing, and how his work and his relationship to his work are always changing.
