Hello There! I am Becky Barsi (aka Artsy Barsi) and you’re listening to Creative Guts!

Hello, Hello to all of you creatives out there in podcast land and welcome to another Creative Catalogue Takeover!

These are bonus episodes that are occasionally taken over and hosted by someone other than Laura and Sarah, and today is one of those days! I am a Creative Guts Board Member and former Creative Guts Guest! I also teach a slew of visual arts classes for students in grades 6-12 and manage the Lyceum Gallery at the Derryfield School in Manchester, NH.

Today, I have two different artists and an art exhibit I would like to invite you to attend!

My first share of the day is the stunning work of Ed Fairburn. I stumbled upon Fairburn’s work through the magical algorithms of the interwebs and was completely mesmerized watching his process.  Fairburn transforms paper maps (remember those things we used to use for directions) into captivating works of art through his unique technique known as TOP-O-POINTILLISM. Drawing inspiration from topography and pointillism, he utilizes traditional materials like ink, paint, and pencil to delicately modify the contours, roads, and intricate patterns found in cartography. Through gradual alterations, he unveils hidden human forms, achieving a harmonious blend of figure and landscape within each piece.

Fairburn's approach involves a deep understanding of the terrain, and he describes spending hours studying the map's features before embarking on the artistic process. What is really unique is how he embraces each map's inherent structure aiming to enhance the composition while preserving the functionality of the original map. The result is a captivating synthesis where the completed map behaves like a portrait when viewed from a distance, creating a paradoxical effect where intricate details become more apparent as one steps back for a broader perspective. Fairburn's work showcases a meticulous exploration of subtlety and synchronization, offering viewers a unique and thought-provoking experience.

Holy Moly, am I excited to share the work of this next artist with you! I’d like to introduce you to Christian Scott, AKA BlackBean_CMS. If you love to watch time lapse or process videos AND you love to laugh, then you will LOVE the work of Christian Scott. Scott’s lively personality and commentary mirrors his incredibly vibrant abstracted portraits that he creates with a range of brightly colored materials including oil pastels, colored pencils, oil paint and in plaster cast sculptures. Scott’s engaging videos introduce the viewers to his many artistic inspirations, unique processes, and offers support and guidance for artists and creatives who may be new to working in similar media. I especially appreciate how honest Scott is in sharing about the struggles that accompany so many creatives throughout their practice. His videos are uplifting and encourage viewers to “Stay creative and push through that art block”. When I first looked at Scott’s YouTube page I hit that subscribe button immediately, and have really enjoyed the creative challenges that he sets for himself including transforming one of his prints by altering with ink, experimenting with various materials, and proving that you can create masterful works of art using simple or introductory materials like crayons! Scott’s motto is one that many of us can aspire to: “Living my life in as many colors as I can fit on a palette and inspire along the way!” What joy and passion he is sharing with the world. You can check out Christian Scott, his artwork and videos on the socials at blackbean_CMS.

My final creative share today is for an exhibition I recently curated at the Lyceum Gallery at the Derryfield School in Manchester, NH.

ENGRAINED, features the work of Daniela Wenzel and Trevor Toney, and offers art enthusiasts a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of geometric and biomorphic abstraction, narrative painting, and the exquisite craftsmanship of woodwork. Wenzel and Toney's works share an intriguing dialogue within the "ENGRAINED" exhibition. Wenzel's abstract narratives and dynamic pattern work converse with Toney's geometric subjects, creating a harmonious balance between non-representational interpretations and the inherent qualities of wood.

ENGRAINED will be on display from November 28, 2023 to January 17, 2024, and is open to the public Monday to Friday between 8:00 A.M and 3:00 P.M., or by appointment by emailing lyceumgallery@derryfield.org. A closing reception to celebrate the artists will be held on January 17th, 2024 from 5:00 - 6:30 P.M. Don't miss the opportunity to witness the fusion of creativity and craftsmanship in this exceptional exhibition.
